UAT Environment

A UAT environment is the production-like setup where business users run User Acceptance Testing before a release goes live.

Full Definition

A UAT environment is where business users test a release before it reaches production. It should look and behave like production as closely as possible (same configuration, same integrations in their sandbox form, realistic data), because UAT answers a business question: will this work for us, in our real processes? If the environment differs from production, users accept something that will behave differently on go-live day.

What a good UAT environment has:
  • •Production-like configuration: the same settings, feature flags, roles and permissions users will have in production
  • •Realistic, safe data: anonymised or masked copies of production data, or carefully built test data that covers real business cases
  • •Connected integrations: sandbox versions of payment, email, ERP or CRM systems, so end-to-end business flows can be tested
  • •A frozen build: the release candidate under test, not a build that changes every hour
  • •Access for business testers: accounts and roles for the people who will sign off, not only for QA

UAT environment vs other environments:
  • •Development and QA environments change often and are used by the delivery team
  • •Staging is often the same environment as UAT, or a copy of it, used for final technical checks
  • •Production is where real users work; UAT exists so problems are found before they reach it

Common UAT environment mistakes:

Testing on a QA environment that keeps changing under the testers; using data so artificial that real cases (long names, old customers, unusual products) are never tried; and missing integrations, so the flows business users care most about cannot be tested end to end. Each of these turns a UAT sign-off into a guess.

Best practices:
  • •Agree the UAT build and freeze it for the test window
  • •Refresh and mask data before UAT starts, and document what was loaded
  • •List the environment details (URL, build, data set, integrations) in the UAT test plan; the free UAT test plan generator has a section for it
  • •Keep defects found in UAT linked to the test case and step that found them

Examples

  • 1.A staging environment refreshed with masked production data the week before UAT, running the release candidate build 2.5.0
  • 2.UAT accounts for the finance team with the same roles they have in production, so approval flows behave the same way
  • 3.Payment and email integrations pointed at sandbox accounts, so testers can complete a full order without real charges
  • 4.A UAT test plan that lists the environment URL, build number, data refresh date and known limitations

In BesTest

BesTest records where testing happened through your test cycle: put the environment, build and data set in the cycle description or in test case preconditions, run UAT in its own cycle, and testers log results and linked Jira bugs in the Test Player. The free UAT test plan generator includes an environment section you can fill in.
